"Reinventing Myself: Memoirs of a Retired Professor" is a series of personal essays written before and during the author's struggle to come to terms with aging, retirement, widowhood, and depression. It is about these problems, as well as family, teaching, travel, and enjoying life in Chicago.

Ms. Styne revented herself through reflection and writing, and she encourages all, especially her fellow senior citizens, to write.
