Beverly Magid
Although a longtime LA resident, author Beverly Magid still considers herself to be a New Yorker. As she says, "After moving from Philadelphia after school, on my first day in NY, I felt my live begin." While pursuing acting, she worked a diverse array of day jobs, including being advance person for a Congressman, setting up his motor caravans, an interesting task for someone who didn't drive and couldn't read a map. She played the innocent receptionist for a segment on the reality tv series,"Candid Camera;" became assistant to a talent agent who could have been the clone of "Entourage's"Ari Gold. While a journalist, she got to do the first John Lennon interview after he left the Beatles, and when she became an entertainment publicist, she worked with such clients as Whoopi Goldberg, Dolly Parton, John Denver, Olivia Newton-John, Jacqueline Bisset, Tom Skerritt, Martin Landau, Neil Diamond, and Barry Manilow among others. But writing has always been the driving creative ambition and in a workshop run by Janet Fitch, author of "White Oleander," Beverly took a story that she had previously written and developed it into the novel, "Flying Out of Brooklyn." She is currently working on her second novel. |
Flying Out of Brooklyn
Synopsis: It's 1943, the summer temperatures are soaring, the world is caught in the middle of a war, and in Brooklyn Judith Weissman is trappped by an unsatisfying marriage and life, living in a community which scrutinizes everything one does. She begins an affair with a returning soldier, someone she idolized back in school, but the war has changed him, both emotionally and physically. That summer Judith learns that nothing stays the same, not even one's most treasured dreams.
